smell of petrol in water

I think I might know the answer to this but I have to keep topping up my coolant quite often usually every few days. Just this evening i think i also smelt petrol in the header tank. Is this a sign that the head gasket has gone and needs replacing.

I also think I am going to need a new clutch shortly too so i think this might be a good time to say goodbye to the xantia and look at another car i might consider breaking the car if anyone is interested or sell it spares or repair if I can get a reasonable offer,
