1559cc D engine smoking

Post by CONFUSED »

Ive cured the air bubbles and re-checked the timing and it is still running rough even when warmed up UKMOBILEMAN you said a head gasket problem can you elaborate as the head has been skimmed (20 thou off, a lot I know)and 2 x 2 notch gaskets fitted! before that a 5 notch had been fitted after the skim and the pistons were hitting the exhaust valves very slightly, resulting in a lack of power and noise but no smoke white or black. the head was removed and checked for damage (none) and refitted with the 2 gaskets with the resulting problem any further ideas please

I heard of fitting two head gaskets to petrol engines to lower compression when fitting a Turbo because of the high pressures, etc. But not a diesel, maybe this is why you have excessive smoke and bad starting, your compression is now too low (like a worn out engine) not igniting the fuel mixture correctly.
Maybe you should start from scratch and get hold of a good spare head from a scrappy.
