Overheating Xantia

Hi,
My 1.9 TD has started overheating at high revs, and the heaters for inside the car blow cold even when the engine is very hot. Oil temp also goes a lot higher than normal. The thermostat was replaced over six months ago. Could it be this again?? I thought a new component would last longer, or could something else be causing this??

Not the thermostat again, probably lack of coolant and air in the system.
Check the coolant level in the header tank when cold.
With engine running, loosen whatever vent valves you can find, and especially the highest one on the outlet of the heater, until coolant comes out.
Both heater hoses should be equally warm, otherwise there’s no water flow through them.

is that under your hood??

I got the same problem, did a coolant change and cant seem to give it enough water, cant see any leaks, i let some air out of the valve on the top left of the engine (a T pipe) but cant find the other one?

Yes, on the firewall under the windscreen, well hidden high up, below the wipers.
Left picture shows the heater hoses disconnected, photo scabbed from a French forum.
Right picture is from my own car, photographed through a narrow view from just above the driver’s side mudguard.
The T-piece isn’t high enough to let all the air out.

I allways found it easier to bleed out the air like this.

Top up the radiator.
Find the little leak off hose that dissapears behind the headlight into the inner wing.
Pull the pipe out from the inner wing but leave it connected to the rad.
Stick the (wiped clean) open end in your mouth.
Open the bleed on the top of the heater hose.
Put you palm flat accross the radiator top where the cap was to form a seal.
Blow down the pipe and watch for airless water.
Put the cap back on the heater hose.
Top the rad up if needed.
Put the pipe back where it came from.

I would stress that this problem needs sorting now, as an overheating XUD engine will soon lead to head gasket failure or worse.

i never have any trouble bleeding xantia coolant systems, all i do is

(1) fill coolant till it wont take any more

(2) start engine with header tank cap off

(3) run engine and keep topping water up as needed

(4) keep up 3 untill the top hose starts to get hot (thermostate opend)

(5) keep running engine till the rad is evenly hot all across it surface

(6) top coolent up again to corect level and replace the header tank cap

(7) now run engine till rad fans cut in and once they cut out carfully remove tank cap coolant shoul now be calm

i find bleeding them in the way they self bleed

I do almost precisely the same and find exactly the same result. Never had a problem doing it this way on a Xantia.

Thanks for the help, I bleed the cooling system with the bleed valves, got lots of air out, then took the car for a good drive and the temperature's back to normal about 70 degrees and the heaters are warmer than they've ever been.
