Apparently webfusion who the site is hosted with are known for issues
http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews556.html

It could be that another customer of theirs is running web applications which are taking all the server's resources, or they could just be pants.

I host my forum with streamline http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews66682.html and have had very little downtime, mostly due to maintenance, but if there is a problem they're pretty quick off the mark to resolve it.
Around 1/3-1/2 the price too depending if you pay for 1 or 2 years up front.

Since the re-launch of Frenchcarforum, it will not allow me to upload my avatar, notwithstanding many tries... not the end of the world though.

Yes, the forum can be slow to load, or even unfindable on occasion...

I was wondering about that, I have only just joined you and it's been like that since the start - I spent an hour trying to get the avatar to work with various types, configurations and locations of an image (same image I use on other citroen forums) and just gave up in the end...

Yep - its so slow that me too I choose to shut down my IE6 browser more often than not.
At times it helps just waiting 2 minutes before a re-try, but its certainly not the rule :(
Same goes with the BXclub forum

Whats worse, I've lost access to the CitroenZ forum using my (well & truly latest updated !!) IE6 explorer.
By coincidence I found out that my FireFox browser could access that site no problem, but wont allow me to log in

Something strange is going on - on the internet I believe.

Honestly I dont have the guts to upgrade for the IE7 browser. I cant imagine this will make things any better.
Anyone with exp running IE7 under XPhome ?

Being a Mac user, I currently use Firefox, but will try the Avatar problem with Safari and see if it makes any difference....

Still refused to upload Avatar using Safari or Firefox, both of which worked OK before the deluge...

I'm running IE7 on XP Pro with precisely the same results as everyone else

It gets so frustrating at times and spoils the enjoyment of this forum terribly.

The random nature of the problem suggests the host server (which I guess is shared with a lot of other sites) is running out of processor time to proces the forum PHP scripts, hence why index.php often returns a blank screen.

The avatar problem is simply down to permissions on the PHP scripts folders on the server. I've played around with phpBB a little and experienced the same problem.

The only way out of this slowness is to move to a dedicated host, one that hosts only this forum.
