When they are gone they give a deep clonking noise at the rear, and the back end squirm about all over the place. 10 years / 100k miles seems about the life. Worth jacking up first and checking that the play is not in the tailing arm bearing - if it is then you will need to renew the subframe - changing the bearings is a (-expletive removed-) not worth bothering with!
