Bloody Brakes!

Post by Guru Meditation »

May have seen earlier topics having problems with brake vibration. Replaced front discs and pads with some brembo stuff from Andyspares, don't think front is problem anymore. Testing rears with the handbrake became apparent that the rear brakes when applied causing some very bad vibrations (like, whoaa man, this is some trippy s**t, bad vibrations...). Whipped off drums on sat to see two apparently ok drums (no lip but could not test 'em for ovality) and apparently a seized cylinder on offside rear. I couldn't be bothered to work on the brakes (hate working on brakes!! Pipes looked corroded etc, nightmare) so took to Mr Clutch on today had two new wheel cylinders, new shoes and whole lot bled. Cost £120 . Not too bad I suppose. They also adjusted the handbrake etc (part of the job 'spose). Now the brakes feel a s**t load better. The pedal is better, stopping power is more like it should be but THERE IS STILL SOME VIBRATION AAAAAAHHHHH!!! It's not terrible vibration but still easily descernable particularly at low speed. Testing on the handbrake again shows there is still some vibration from the rears, lot less than before but there is stll noticeable vibration-this vibration is felt both through the brake pedal and through the vehicle.
So I've concluded one or both drums oval (possibly the offside drum that only had one shoe pushing against it?) and ordered a pair of drums from Andyspares. Taking 'em to Mr Clutch to fit as I wanna use the wheel bearings from my current drums and don't have a press etc.
If this doesn't sort it out I'm going to cry or kill myself I swear it!!!

GM,
You think Mr.C will get those old bearings out of the old drums without spoiling them?? More faith than I have.
They are only about £40 for two so I'd order them as well and fit them to the new drums then you can swap the drums yourself...that's a doddle.

Thinking about that, sound advice. I have ordered two wheel bearings as well. I mean, even if Mr Clutch manage to salvage both bearings they still gonna want £20+ to do the job, may as well pay a few quid more and get the gurantee of two good bearings as well. Like you drums easily done myself. I take it the new bearings can be installed with the aid of a drift?
Thanks.

On the subject of rear bearings. I took my then ZX reflex to Kwikfit for a free brake check. Their gorillas obviously used a large impact tool (mallet) to remove the drums, OK so far apart from the fact that they took the bearings with them.

Doh! F**king monkeys! I once had to use a puller to get a drum off as the bearing was seized to the shaft. Finally got it of and had driveway scattered with million roller bearing bits.
