mp3 player to the 3030 rad/cass

Post by steviewonder7 »

Hi people,
I'm wondering if those more technically minded can help me here.
I'm thinking (if it works of course) of potentialy making the use of fitting an mp3 player to the jack at the front of the Blaupunkt 3030 rad/cass I have in the xantia. Is this possible?
Are there any drawbacks with applying this idea to this particular rad/cass player?
I dont really want to change the 3030 player as it seems to be working fine at the moment but for giving me more options at being able to play more music the idea of applying the above would be more favourable...if it works of course.
I know I'm going to open a tin of worms by asking the next question, but which mp3 player is goodenough, simple enough and relative cheap enough to suit this situation?
Answers greatfully recieved....Stevie :)

I have an ipod (gen4 given free from a previous employer) which I connect via a stereo lead (with jacks on both ends).
Had to unlock the volumn on the ipod to make it loud enough to get over background hisses/interferance.

I've taped the ipod to the fuse cover flap (where the user manual should sit) and run the wires under the steering column making sure it can't interfere with anything or drop down.
From there the power lead comes out in the passenger footwell to the 4way power socket I have there.
The stereo lead comes out next to the radio and plugs in.

It means I can get in the car at the start of a journey, drop the ipod down on the flap, set it playing and not need to touch it again.
You can also get one of these:

So you can hop forward and back through tracks without having to touch the ipod.

It should work - Tesco sell some cheap MP3 players but they're rubbish. Try ebay perhaps? What I found was the batteries didn't last so bought two sets of rechargeables.

Last year I purchased a cheap (£47 I think) Sony CD player that reads MP3's and just fitted it in my Xantia today. The sound is soooooo much better but I miss using the steering wheel remote controls.

hmm Mike there must be a way to get some signal from mark 2 steering wheels to work earlier stereos... its all about resistance... surely we can change the resistors in the wheel control board t match ones from a mark 1...

Even if its just a few buttons that work...

The Sony head unit I bought has no inputs for the steering wheel controls but I'm trying to work out how to use the steering wheel switches for other "accessories" I plan to install 8)

I caused the confusion (I usually do!) by not making it clear the CD player was a replacement head unit for the standard radio/cassette

Aye Cap'n! My secret weapon is all above board I assure you. 8) I'm currently asking the manufacturer of a certain "black box" if I can tap into the panel switches and operate it remotely. The freed facia space below (created from fitting the sony head unit) will make an excellent hidey hole for the unit too.

den169: According to the manual for my unit there is no mention it can accept remote controls. Interestingly, the wiring diagram for the connector says "Pins 1,2,3 & 6 do not have pins" - yet the head unit does. :?

I just noticed it does an IR remote optional extra available so maybe there's hope - do you know what pins your adapter uses for the remote function?

The Autolead facias are £20 to buy you can buy cheap rubbish ones off ebay that don't fit,The Steering wheel adapters are £30 to buy,
I'll take £20 for the pair delivered. I will have to search the garage for them though.lol

I think it's to conform to a French restriction, and believe me, my ipod afterwards is deafening!

You can pick up cheap ipods off ebay for next to nothing, one of the advantages being that as it's a major player, there's plenty of accessories such as in car chargers and wireless remotes.

I currently use a Creative Muvo2, only the 1.5gig version but it does me for what i need and even at a volume level of 19 out of 25 it lasts 10hrs+ on a full charge. It uses the same kind of battery as most Nokia phones do so swapping batteries and having spares is cheap enough. mine works thru a tape style adapter as i have a MKII radio with no input jack but it works quite well for the £3 it cost me :) the unit is so small i can have it in the cubby under the radio and pick it up, see at a quick glance the button on it or feel for it an then skip to the next track as its set on random 99% of the time :)
