Steering rack gaitor

Post by alan s »

I'm presently trying to find out info on how to fit the gaitors (boots) on to the steering rack.
I've already fitted one to the drivers side without any drama but to fit it to the passengers side seems an almost impossible task. It appears that the housing that the ram attaches to which has a lug poking out off the side is too large, when the length of the lug is taken into consideration, to allow the boot to fit over it. How do you remove this (assuming it has to be removed to fit the new gaitor) and if not, what's the secret to fitting the b!00dy thing?
BTW, the car is a right hand drive BX 16V.

Have a look at this link- http://www.bx.citroen.org/m38/m38.html
Now I can't read Japanese, but if you scroll down to the bottom of the page-uurgh!!!It looks like you need to prise the new boot over the lug with two metal rods--I don't envy you with that job--good luck.

There is apparently a way to translate these Japanese sites very easily, does anyone know where on the net I find it??

Alan - the easiest way is a google search on "automatic translation" on www.google.com - you'll find babelfish amongst the top couple of results on http://world.altavista.com/
You may, however, need to load Japanese Language support for your browser first - possibly from Microsoft if it won't come off a Windows disc, otherwise babelfish may throw up its fins in horror. This utility in its free form is limited to 150 words at a time - I don't know whether each Kanji character is counted as a word though!

Sorry - forgot to add that you will need to cut and paste the relevant text into a separate browser window running the translation utility.
Unfortunately google doesn't offer to translate the site for you, unlike sites in some languages.
I'm sure someone will suggest a beter alternative, as I seem to remember there's a utility that will translate whole sites, a page at a time.

I've replaced this gaitor on a BX 19GT a few years ago and you do have to prize it over the lug. I seem to remember having great difficulty with a pattern gaitor though and got the stretchiest one I could find to fit. I don't know if a genuine Citroen one would be any easier. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Fortunately, I don't have to get the car back on the road in any other great hurry apart from stopping the battery going flat so I'll keep persevering with it, patience & temper permitting
and post the results in common problems when I do get it sorted out. It would appear that this is one of those jobs commonly avoided more than commonly done.
