Post by ncoll »

Hi Folks,
Anybody know the mileage interval for the timing belt on a 2ltr petrol 8valve XM.

Cheers

Haynes BOL for the Xantia says 72K miles but to halve that if subjected to intensive use i.e. mainly short journeys or a lot of stop-start driving.

Not only change the water pump while you're there, buy the CORRECT
type of tensioner - from Citroen if you have to - I know, I know OUCH!!

I've just started to heal the mental scars from a tensioner letting go at
60mph and the hassle in getting my Xm going again - IIRC all 4 of the
inlet valves got mullared. Thing is, the tensioner GSF sell isn't wide
enough to support the belt correctly being a good 5mm narrower so the
belt started to climb off...

actually fitting the belt and being 100% certain the teeth were indeed
right was a real caper too as the crank actually needed a tweak off the
pinned position to get the longest run of the belt under tension which
allowed the pins to align up for checking - I used a proper locking pin
set for peace of mind.

If there's any consolation, the timing covers are a real doddle compared
to removal of them on a Xantia!! :)

Cheers Guys,
I've just purchased an XM on a K plate with 35k on it, loads of bills but no service history, gave my Haynes book away with the last XM I had, guess I will let the man down the road do it.
Thanx again,

i agree with Slim as they normaly say what ever the mileage interval or so many years, which i think is either 2 or 3, so either way you look at it it needs doing yesterday
