Xm2.1 or 2.5 Turbo Diesels

Post by citroenbx »

Hi All....I'm thinking of upgrading my ZX 1.9TD to an XM.

The questions i have so far are :

1 Which Engine is the best ?
2 What can be expected around fuel economy ?
3 Which insurance bracket do these cars fall into ?

If anyone can just answer 1 of these please reply.
Thankyou

the 2.5TD pulls like an elephant, is very rare and bewitched on its headgasket problem ...
the 2.1TD pulls like a workhorse, is a common beast and known for its reliability ...

Do yau have a choice really ?

I would confirm Anders words. I have rune five 2.1 td manual estates in fact I have two at present. The 2.5 is a good engine from the drivers point of view but is horrific to maintain. Access is minimal bordering on impossible and spares are increasingly difficult to obtain and expensive.

The 2.1 on the other hand is reasonable in access for most jobs, it is very reliable if well maintained and spares ar readily available. The manual version is capable of in excess of 50 mpg if driven with some restraint. The auto is best avoided unless you can find one with less than 100k that has been regularly serviced, failure of the box will write the car off and many dont make it much past 100k. My last manual version I sold at nearly 300k and it was still going strong.

They are getting difficult to find now, so be prepared to travel. There are usually about ten on the Autotrader website at any one time, only one or two of these may be 2.1s.

Insurance is high at about group 12-14 but I now have mine insured TPFT only at £118.00. But I dont suppose you are as old as me! :)

PS. There is a '96 with only 78k on ebay at the moment - very rare!
