megane cold starting problem

my friend has a year 2000 1.6 16valve megane and it has developed a slight problem with cold starting. it will turn over and fire and start but soon as you touch the throttle it dies then will not start again for some time after. other times it will start and run ok
it seems to start ok once it has been driven and has been warm and i was wondering if it could be the TDC sensor or the coolant temp sensor, any ideas would be gratefully received

Usually if it dies right after a coldstart it would be lean choke problem.
It COULD also be an overrich choke problem (engine flooded) but that should clearly show clouds of black smoke from unburnt fuel.

The choke is the Coolant Temp Sensor (CTS) on recent cars.

No matter how much computer and electronics they stuff down into controlling the engine - the good old terms on fault tracing still applies. You just need to "translate" from carburettor terms to sensor and computer terms

today he had diagnostics done on it at a local renault garage and they told him what i already had and what you just told me.........Yep its the coolant temp sensor, or good old fashioned choke. thanks anyway. i think they charged him £30 for diagnostics and will be charging him 30 mins labour plus parts!
