Mk2 Xantia 1.9td Exhuast emisions & MOT

Post by KP »

I have to replace my backbox section in the next few weeks due to rust tearing it apart :( and was wondering if i replaced the mid section and replaced it with the same section from a mk1 would my car still pass the MOT emissions test? The mk1 1.9td engined Xantia doesn't have a cat box in the middle, its just a straight pipe from the turbo to the backbox from what I've seen of past ones I've owned, but this mk2 has a small catalytic type box there and was wondering if i do away with it will i fail the emissions test as it would help allow the engine to breath more easily :)

i'm fairly sure you can just do away with the cat, my mk1 2.1td xantia has a cat fitted but i had a big hole cut in it and the inside of the cat removed and welded back up and it's passed it's emissions no problem, as far as i'm aware it's not law to have one fitted to a diesel :D

It will definately pass without the cat as the MOT only tests for smoke, not NOX (which is what the cat removes),mine has for the last seven years :D

As its a 'smoke' test, I would have thought that with a nice new back box + what ever not harbouring any soot it should pass with no problem.

i have fitted the straight throgh section to my R reg XANTIA 1.9TD estate GSFs part No. N21052 and is £36.50 in there catalogue (this pipe fits saloons and estates), the improvement in get up and go is amazing, im sure it should not affect the MOT but will find out in october when its MOT is due

PS

Does anyone know if the Bosal BackBox section from EuroCarParts is any good at all as compared with GSF's £55 price their £25 doesnt look too bad if both of them are just mild steel :)

My back box is split along the seam and I was amazed to find Euro's so cheap compared to the others! I'll definately be buying from them but I'm waiting until I need to get a full system so I can dump the cat and release a few more horses.
