key fob

Unread post by Bren »

The spare key fob for my Xantia has never been able to unlock the doors, even though the red LED on the key illuminates when pressed. Any ideas?

Presume this is a MK1 car? In which case it should be possible to program the remote to the car.

All you have to do is turn the ignition on to the first position, then fire the key at the dome in the roof (up close) a couple of times and it should code in - AFAIK you can do multiple keys if you do them in quick succession - but you will need a third key to turn the ignition on - or take the innards out of the fob and use the key part in the ignition and (carefully) point the fob at the dome.

Of course you may end up with neither key working.....

It is possible for the LED to light but the fob not to work - either because the sender is bust (check by pointing it at a digi camera and pressing the button) or because the fob is scrambled - I managed to do this to 2 fobs by getting them too close to the lead on a HF start TIG welder....

Do you have the service key? The one without a remote?
I've been told that if you have that in the ignition you can program more than one key.

Just to check - to do 2 keys you need to do the following:

1) Turn on ignition
2) press key 1
3) press key 2
4) turn off ignition

if you turn off and on again between 2 and 3 then you will just overwrite the previous key each time.
Cheers,
Rowan.

I found this online but don't know if it works, let alone for your car. Try it at your own risk...

Those methods appear to be for the later RF remotes.

They certainly don't work on my Mk1 infrared remote as the LED does not flash when you hold the button down.

How many times did you press each button ? I havn't programed two to one car before, but when programing one I found I had to press it 20-30 times for it to program.

So try pressing each remote button alternatively with about 20 presses each.

Also don't give up too easily - sometimes they are very stubborn about learning new codes - I had to try about 5 times to get my mums car to learn a single new remote let alone two remotes...

looking at the link mike gave i think the red light is the one in the car not on the plip
although i could be totally wrong

i found with mine that even though i had good batteries i still needed to squeeze the plip in the middle to make it work properly

i solved this by putting a metal washer between batteries and this made a better contact as the spring arm inside was a bit slack

It won't work on my MK1 infra-red either. The fob only sends one short signal so holding the button down does nothing more. Additionally, the 6th step says to hold it near the ignition which is irrelevant, in fact obstructive to the signal, being line-of-sight. Going by that, it must be instructions for an RF system.

There is also this list for the pugs which DOES relate to the infra-red system but with so many different variations according to model, I'm not going to risk my one and only working fob to test it.
