Saxo noises !!!!!

Post by SimonT »

Hi all.
Just settling in to owning a little 1.5D Saxo and I'm noticing a couple of strange (hopefully unrelated) noises.
The first is a knocking ( de de de de type of noise )which seems to follow the road speed, from the nearside wheel area when I'm turning left only and only when accelerating fairly hard. Any ideas?????
Also sometimes, but not always, on starting the car only, a wierd rattling noise fom the engine area which will stop if I push and release the clutch and then doesn't happen again. Any clues?
Thanks in advance.

de de de de de which worsens when cornering at one side - is most surely a a a a a CV joint.

The push to release rattling would be the clutch pedal push to release bearing.

I had a similar noise on our ZX 1.9D - sort of roar when negotiating sharpish corners under acceleration (or whatever they call it on a 1.9D ZX) - primarily when coming out of roundabouts fairly fast.

I couldn't hear anything untoward at slow speeds with the steering on full lock and it confused a mechanic who told everything was fine. He did add that that the car was safe! My view is that the thing shouldn't make noises like this and that noises are a warning that something is wrong so I persevered.

New shaft sorted the problem! The old one had had the outer boot replaced 18 months before which with hindsight was a waste of time and money - I'd have done better to have done the job properly in the first place - even though I caught the boot when it had started to split.

Agree with Jeremy on the drive shaft, not to difficult a job. As regards the rattle from the gearbox, does it stop when you declutch or increase the revs? if so I would leave well alone as its a gearbox out job. One of my XMs has done it pretty well since it had a new clutch, and I'm not about to take the gearbox out again!

yes but its a slightly easyer job on a saxo to drop the gear box out than on an XM/XANTIA

Right, you forget about 'normal' cars when you run an XM! :?
