CX25ie Auto stalling in reverse. Any clues?

Post by UFO »

Last night when we arrived in Sydney to stay with a friend for the
evening and go to see "Priscilla - The Musical" (great show - you
should see it if it ever tours outside Aus - any way back on topic).
We arrived at our friends and went to reverse the CX into a parking
spot and the car sort of surged a couple of times backwards and then
stalled.

I started it again and tried again and the same symptoms. We were on
a slight forwards slope so I drove down the street to level area and
it was not much better. Anyway, we went around the block and managed
to get into a parking spot without using reverse. Driving forwards
seems fine.

On our way this morning to a classic car show we checked the Dex 2 and
added about 600ml of a 1l bottle as the level was just touching the
end of the dipstick when we checked. On arrival at the show the
performance in reverse was no better.

Standing around theorising with a few people, we can only assume
(hopefully) that the bands require adjustment. I have previously done
this on my BX Tri Auto and am expecting that the CX job will be about
the same.

Can anyone confirm our thoughts or provide an alternate view - please?

i would check for vaccum leaks first, as it may be that as the revers torque tilts the engine it opens up a split in a vaccum pipe, which might not happen in forward mode

Thanks for the quick response Malcolm. Does the HP22 have a vacuum tube connection somewhere?

I think I have the solution. Read this on the yahoo CX list. But not trying it tonight.

Craig -
could you please cut & paste the important part of the yahoo group text ?

- as its a bit tedious for most of us to register first and then read the text

what do you mean by the HP22 as i was talking about a vaccum leak in the induction manifold/ air intake system, as this can give a flat spot which can cause stalling

Can the engine tilt that much to open such a split to cause stalling?

Lots of autobox problems can be cured with new oil. Thats where I'd start.

if you have the engine running with the bonnet up and get some the stick it into gear with the brakes hard on, get them to bring it on and off of the biteing point quite sharp you will see how much the engine dose move whilst under torque

It certainly helps when the clamp holding the air hose to the throttle body is correctly tightened. I opened the bonnet this afternoon and the shiny metal on the left end of the throttle body gave it away. 30 seconds later I had the hose back on properly and tightened. Drove it around the block, reversed a few times and all is beautiful.

Thank goodness for that - I think a gearbox out would push my stress levels to the max at the moment and financially could prevent ICCCR 2008 from happening for us.

Thanks for the advice all.

Now I just have to find that idiot that didn't tighten the clamp when he checked the air filter a couple of weeks ago.
