Activa hydraulic pump

Post by Panjandrum »

For the last six months or so my Activa has been bleeding green stuff. There is a leak from the hydraulic pump. It amounts to about 1/2 litre a month.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement, refurbished hydraulic pump?

GSF can't help.

Hi Panj,

I don't think it's any different from a standard Xantia. In any case Pelaides will be able to help.

From where is it leaking? New O rings are available for the unions so you may not have to replace the pump.

I think some of the Xantia pumps are held together with bolts - in which case tightening may help.

There are a number of postings on here about pump repair which is generally only possible with the newer types (older ones have a can on the back of the pump which is considered impossible to remove). Some can be re-sealed apparently. The Activa pump may be special with a different length shaft or pulley. I don't think its larger.

Thank you for the replies.
I'll follow up to check the tightening possibilities - and also Pleiades.

The guy who does complicated things to my Activa (like the cambelt) reckons that the pump can't be repaired - though of course he could be wrong.

For information, here are a couple of pictures:

I'd try tightening everything in site - like the through bolts and the pipe unions (and the sockets) first - its a lot cheaper than a replacement.

Cleaning the old LHM off it first may give a clue as to where its coming from - I don't think its the shaft gland.

I've had the seals beneath the main high pressure pipe joints let go
allowing loads of fluid past them. They're not much from Citroen
and well worth replacing first.

I'm sure all the pumps I've seen on Xantiae are the type which have
3 or 4 main through bolts holding the end cap onto the main orbital
valve body. There are quite substantial o rings and the machined
faces which have a shoulder step shouldn't really leak unless incorrectly
controlled internal pressure forced them to shear! Been there before...

I totally agree with Jeremy's comment to watch for differing drive pulley
diameters though any post 94/5 pump will be the same for the pipes
connecting to it so at least you need just concentrate on the pulley!!

One other point - you're lucky the pump is where it is on an Activa,
rather than buried beneath everything and only accessed through the
wheelarch with the wheel removed.

Well, yes, I really ought to have tried that more carefully before now.

I got the outside really clean and ran the engine for a while.
Nothing.
24 hours and a few miles later, it's obvious now. The leak is from the ... erm ... from the bit that is screwed into the pump body that the pipe connector screws into. The feeble white arrows on these pictures are meant to show the join.

My question now - does this look like a leak that can be fixed by replacing a seal?

Yes - there is an o-ring seal there that can be replaced, and which is available from Citroen - in fact there is an o-ring for each of the 8 pistons - 2 large ones for the two pistons that power the brakes/suspension (of which your leaky one is one) and 6 smaller ones for the power steering.

In fact you don't even need to remove the pump from the car to do that particular one. Just remove the hydraulic pipe and unscrew the plug that it is screwed into.

Be very careful to catch the piston, springs, etc that are below it - they are small and could easily fall out and get lost.

There is a really good link to a site (in Thai) that has full pictures and internal diagrams of the pump but you may need to trawl the forum a bit to find it...

Simon

I dont know if you have been sorted yet, but I got a pump for my mates Activa from Pleiades, they had one sat on the shelf.

It is possible that they have seals ???

Slim.

yes Slim -

Service net indicates you can get housing and axle seals.

OK - I know I move slowly on these things.

A huge thank you to all who replied.

Armed with the information you gave me I set off to buy an O-ring.
Citroendealer had two of them.
Wanted £1.12.
Didn't have change for a £20 so I got the O-ring for nothing.

I spoke to James, the guy who lovingly cares for my Xantia, who was almost reluctant to believe that this small rubber whatnot was the answer to my problem.

O-ring replaced, no more leaks. The old O-ring (James always gives me the old bits) was hard and was worn flat on one side.

I could swear that the Activa is moving faster, cornering better, and cruising more quietly as a result.

Again thanks guys.
