I just snapped off a wheelnut in the hub. Really not impressed. Probably my fault as I tightened them up. So pleased its the dead car.

James. Don't you mean the bolt has sheared into the hub!?

If you were undoing it, it's strange for the bolt the snap - they're
not thin spindly items by any means - the threads on the hub must
be totally knackered.

I'm sure I could snap a wheel bolt if I pulled hard on a breaker bar!

The thread in the hub is probably undamaged - and as its no longer under tension the stub will come out quite easily - grip the stub with some form of gripper or use a centre punch to drive it round until enough emerges to grip.

Wheel Bolt thats the one. No chance of gripping it. Luckily its broken clear of the thread so thread is likely to be fine. Centre punch it shall be, when it stops raining.
Think it was totally because of me, I put it in to tight on a summy day and I tried to take it out on a cold day without driving the car first. I was jumping on the bar when it happened.
Don't understand why alll the others were ok though, I had to check the whole car, probably I only put in this one too tight.

Were the threads dry or did they have oil / grease on them?

If they're dry, wheel nuts often do creak and groan and sound horrible when you take them off.

The hub is the outer for the wheel bearing so it's made of pretty hard material, the threads in there will be absolutely fine I'd expect.

Always lots of grease, hopefully that'll help it come out. Doesn't matter that much but I want to get it out.

I don't think you are supposed to grease wheel bolts as they have been known to undo on their own if you do

Well all I can say is that I've never greased mine but always use a torque wrench and I've never had any problems undoing them and they've never come loose on their own either :D

I also always use a torque wrench for tightening wheel bolts - and am always surprised how much more I would be tightening them if I simply used a socket and 'T'bar.

I used to put grease on the back faces of alloy wheels to stop then rusting/
sticking onto the hub in my early Citroening days driving CX's. I think I
did get carried away and used quite a lot BUT THEN I realised a tad late
one day driving a CX GTi Turbo that the grease had been fed into the
threads and had managed over time to loosen them; it was just a matter
of time before a wheel came off...

Let's just say that was an 'interesting' experience!

I had to retrace my steps and did find three bolts (as well as the wheel)
and borrowed a bolt off each of the rear wheels to get me home.

Well I'm convinced now. Torque wrench and no grease. I will clean up all the threads with a tap and die as well. Kinda glad now that I did this I don't want runaway wheels!
I only started this post to vent frustration as it was raining so I didn't want to go fix it at the time. Really glad I did though, looks like it could have saved me a bigger problem in the long run.
