Broken Exhaust question

Post by deian »

Hi again,

Recently, the joint going from the pipe to the backbox of my V6 rusted to nothing and gave way, at first it wasn't too bad, but then it broke away and there was no silencer. NOT good, the thing was unbearably LOUD!!!

Since, i've stuffed a pipe inside the back box and slotted it into the broken pipe and put some exhaust sealant to 'quieten' it. The sealant keeps breaking up and makes the car noisy again (not unbearable)... Anyway, I have a few ideas to quieten it, but my main question is... Is it safe/sensible to leave it like this for long, i.e, will the cat.conv be damaged, fuel consumption higher etc etc.

The noise is verrry nice if not a bit loud, so I may leave a little hole there.

Thanks

I've just replaced that pipe on my V6, either http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/exhausts_de ... cordID=378 or http://www.eurocarparts.com/ appeared to be the cheapest.

'Temporary' standard bodge, I don't believe in doing things by half, but in this case it will have to be like this for a while... until my funds recover from getting married in July, and the need to buy drop links and an acc.sphere.

We don't get along with my neighbour anyway, it can't be worse than his stupid camper van with a manky engine (read: black smoke).

Those prices are surprisingly cheap! Excellent stuff. Thanks

The exhaust doesn't get very hot that far back, so there's no need to use exhaust putty.

I used Leakfix epoxy stuff intended for plumbing leaks to repair mine, with some glassfibre mat for reinforcement. It lasted for over three years until I sold the car, and for all I know is still going strong.

You can also use silicone sealeant on exhaust BUT only if the joint is down stream so to speak of the lamda sensor and the cat.

Ive used it a few times and I have found it gives a great seal and as a side effect means if you need to take the exhaust apart it comes apart quite easily.

Harley davison have been putting their exhausts together that way for years.
