BX rear brake pipe

Post by tricky ricky »

Today I noticed that the LHS rear brake pipe was out of its clip on the rear arm. I put it back in the clip, Put wheel pack on the car and set lo normal height. When it was sinking I heard a crunch. Brake pipe is now sheared at the union going into the caliper.

Question is, how easy is it to replace this pipe? I will get one of the cit preformed ones.

Worst part is removing the small 6mm bolt retaining the pipe at the rear arm pivot bolt. No room for tools here, and most likely a rusty mess.
Remember the old pipe can be cut away no problem, thus making access a bit easier.
Drilling out the bolt may be your option. A new 6mm bolt & nut will do the same job.

Its very important ensuring the new pipe fitted is clear of the wheel. Check, check and recheck :!:

The small retaining bolt is located inboards to the rear arm, fitted to an extender piece of the aitirollbar retaining bolts.
You will recognise when you get down under there

Phoned around a number of dealers including Cit parts specialists AEP in Glasgow from where I have got pipes before. None have it in stock!

Part is on order with my local dealer. Hopefully I will have it on Tuesday. In the mean time I will remove the Exhaust. Good job i replaced the 2 rear silencers a few weeks back, or that would have been another headache

Yep good investment. I'm not sure if the home made route is suitible for the pipe I require. I have heard / read that the curly section of this pipe can crack due to flexing if made from cupro nickel and it's best to use a steel pipe.

Is that true?

Ouch -

Bit expensive for a single size flaring tool
You would need the 4.5mm as well if the car has ABS :!:

CuNi pipes are about the best you can get. No problem in making up a coiled section. Its the coil itself that takes use of the pipe's small capability of flexing. I'd believe the original used steel pipes are even more crisp.

Update.

I managed to replace the pipe last Tuesday. Fairly simple job. However, I could not undo the pipe clamp that Anders mentioned. In order to secure the pipe at this point, I wrapped the clamp in self amalgamating tape to give it a soft rubber finish and tie wrapped the pipe to that. It is as secure if the pipe was clamped in the original manner.

The other fiddly part was feeding the new pipe through.

Thanks for the help.
