megane fan blower only works on setting 6

hi, just wondering if anyone could help with my problem, i have a 1998 megane 5dr hatch 1.6e rt and the interior fan blower will only work when switched onto posotion number 6. this is ok but i would like to have the other 5 options aswell.

is this a common problem and is there an easy and cheap fix that can be achieved by the home mechanic

any suggestions would be very welcome

Not knowing the details on the Megane blower, I would believe its the same sort of fan speed controller circuit as found in most other cars.

You have an electronic (or selectible resistor) circuit that sets the blower speed at the lower settings. On max setting a power relay bypasses the controller circuit and connects the blower directly to a 12V feed.

It is very likely then, that you have a faulty controller circuit. Either by components failure or a corroded connection.
Its not likely that the controller circuit has a separate fuse.

thanks anders, i will have to see if i can locate the problem, do you think it would be up near the blower motor and would this be reached under the bonnet around the pollen filter, any advice would be great.

Purely guessing here ...

Since the variable speed setting controller would dissipate quite some heat, its likely to find it reaching into the cold side of the airduct upstream to the blower somewhere.
Might be possible to lurk its location from under the windscreen grille in the firewall department.
You will only have 2 sets of wiring harnesses in the airduct : 1 harness for the blower motor itself containing 2 wires. 1 harness for the speed controller containing several wires.

You may certainly be right that the module is located on the blower motor itself, as this seems to be latest 'la mode' to keep down production line assembly costs.

well i have had a bit of a look under the bonnet and the plastic cowling between windscreen and bonnet but cant really see too much, and as i have air con dont really want to pull it about to much around there and break something

could'nt really get any joy from the haynes manual either

oh well keep on trying

still no joy but will be having a better look when i have more time as i need to remove window wiper that is being stubborn to get the vent grille off, then remove a plate from the bulk head to be able to remove the fan blower motor to get to the connections in question

nothing is ever simple anymore is it

will get back when i manage to pull everthing to bits. lol.
