My handbrake come up to far !

Recently the handbrake on my 1993 ZX 1.9TD Volcane started to come right up and doesn't hold the car on slopes safely.
Any obvious suggestions ?
When the handbrake is up the cables going to the rear brakes feel tight when checked from under the vehicle. One of the rear cables was replaced a couple of years ago.

One of your cables has broken or dropped off the mechanism. Pull the handbrake on and then gently try and drive off forwards - you should find one side of the car will drop down as the handbrake bites, while the other doesn't 'cos it isn't working - this will be the side that needs attention - and probably the old one!

The handbrake barely work's. I have sometimes fogotten to release it before driving off and not noticed for a couple of hundred yards.
I will try and jack it up this weekend and have a look.
