I have a 1.9TD engine/gearbox taken from a Xantia some time ago thats been laying around my garage. I have a buyer coming tomorrow to collect the gearbox; only problem is after taking all bolts that connect engine/gearbox together they only seperate about an inch apart and refuse to budge any further.
Whats the secret? How's it done?
Thanks in advance.

That they separate is encouraging Porgy. The input shaft to the gearbox is binding in the clutch plate by the sound of it, possibly due to a burr on the former. Solution is usually to find a way of turning both outputs of the box by hand in the same direction, with the box in gear. This will rotate the input shaft slightly and should allow the box to come off. If they don't, it may be possible to get a slim spanner between the bellhousing and the flywheel and undo the clutch bolts. That will work if you can gain access.

The TD and 2.0 L petrols have pull type clutches, to seperate the gearbox from the engine you must punch the pin out on top of the release arm and take the arm off, this allows the release fork to rotate and dissengage from the release bearing as the box is withdrawn, on these engines the release bearing is secured to the pressure plate diaphragm spring.
