No heat into a Xantia

Post by andmcit »

Where would the motor operating the flap for hot/cold be found on the
airbox on the bulkhead?

I'm guessing it's the nearside footwell but does anyone here know if it's
possible to access the flap or the motor to tug it to determine if that is
the failure that's stopping heat getting into the car?

Is there some other issue I'm missing - the system uses cables everywhere
and I realise one may have come undone of the front control panel but they
seem reassuringly firm in their movement/adjustment. I can't imagine the
water running through the matrix is going to stay cold!

You know the summer weather has had it when posts appear moaning about
heater problems... :x

Not actually sure where the motor is located - but there are two different systems. The earlier manual systems which don't have AUTO and don't have a numbered temperature dial simply have bowden cables from the sliders to the flaps, and don't use a motor, as far as I know.

The later models have motor operated flaps, and the temperature slider is fully electronic and in no way physically connected to the flaps. (No bowden cable) Any normal setting in the numbered range operates the flap based on ambient temperature, but if you want to test it go to fully cold and fully hot to ensure that the flap is operated - there is still about a 10 second delay.

Fair comment - I haven't listed my Xantias FULL description.

It's a very early L plated '93 VSX 1.9TD without AC. I wouldn't mind,
but I didn't bother stripping down an identical cars dash just a week back
that was all 100% working!

I'm guessing the whole mechanism is cable operated with the car being
so early in spec VSX - trim notwithstanding. The other issue I have, is the
car isn't near me at the moment as a good pal is using it until his 25TD Xm
gets back from some fettling surgery/expense on it's timing belts etc.

Jut come off the phone now and he's saying the wtare temp went high
to 100 or thereabouts and he's letting it cool down before checking water
levels etc. I hope the HG is OK although it should be as the engine has in
the recent past had a anew head with HG etc at significant expense and
it usually as good as gold. It would start acting up when it's not on my watch...

Guess the lack of heat and the heating up of the engine are too much of
a coincidence to ignore. My pal is pretty clued up on the mechanicals so
I've told him to check/bleed/top where necessary on the cooling circuit
and report back although it looks like I'm going to have to go and look
at it, for my peace of mind - can't have one of the regulars pack in on me!!

If it has a temperature control marked in degrees and an 'auto' setting on the fan speed, it will have a flap motor. Never had a Xantia, but on the XM its underneath the glove box.

cant see it having automated temp control (my m reg one didnt) if you can still feel resistance when you change from hot to cold the cable must be ok

could be a blocked heater matrix (any rad weld in it :D )

could be failed thermostat

check that the pipes from and to the matrix are both hot...if they arent i would guess its the thermostat (what temp is the car showing as it is being driven?)
