Pollen Filter

Post by micitroen »

Wow, just changed the pollen filter on my Xsara....what a difference! Where I was having to use 3rd speed to get any airflow through the vents; its now blowing a gale at only the 2nd speed....and the state of the old one! Yuk! Easy job and well worth the 11 quid from GSF.

Glad to see this reported.

I have taken the view that the main reason behind fan motor failure (on all makes of car) is due to the fan trying to push air through a blocked filter. As you have said the fan is now on a lower speed but putting more air in the car, imagine the strain on the motor before you changed the filter.

Now you just need to remember to change it once per year.

Regards
Slim.

And if the finances take a turn for the worse, you wash the filter until it falls apart. Image

Does the pollen filter have any purpose other than, er, filtering pollen?!

I had considered removing it completely on my car. Presumably with no filter element in at all the ventilation system would work even better, it would put less wear on the motor and it saves having to change it every year.

The filter keeps leaf matter and rubbish off the evaporator, which is wet when operating the air conditioning.
There’s the risk of blocking and freezing the evaporator.

Yes I hadn't thought of that, I imagine an evaporator would clog up fairly quickly without.

What I found puzzling was when Vauxhall/Opel started fitting pollen filters to non-aircon cars in the 90's. At the times of year when its hot enough to have significant amounts of pollen & dust in the air, its generally going to be too hot to drive with the windows closed on a car with no aircon! I would certainly leave the filter out on one of those!

Mine is a non air con car but with all the sh*t that came out both in, on and along with the filter its worth it I'd say.

cleaned mine out this weekend and the WIFE had a belter of an idea

once cleaned get a refil for one of the plug in air fresheners and pour over filter.it soaks into fabric and when dried and replaced you get a fresh scent pumped into the car for free :D :D

can finally bin those blasted trees and other gimmicks :) :)
