xantia tyres

Unread post by dean s »

Just a quicky, my wifes xantia is needing 4 new tryes, 185/65/15. The problem is we are only intending to keep it another 6 months or so, when it will be replaced, so don't want to spend a fortune on it. In my garage I have 4 brand new Uniroyal 195/65/15 tyres, according to a few website tyre calculators the increase in diameter is 2.1% which would make the speedo pretty much bang on accurate. Has anyone got this tyre size fitted, and will they fit with no rubbing to the inner arches etc? I know an optional size fitted is 205/60/15 so I'm hoiping I can fit them.
Cheers

195/65/15 will fit just fine - its one of the (many) original standard sizes.

My Dad's Xantia has 195/65/15 and mine has 205/60/15 and they both fit without any problems with rubbing against anything...

As for speedo accuracy - 2% is less than the typical accuracy of a speedo. (Which can be up to 10% out by law) On my car with the 205/60/15 (originally fitted with 185/65/15) when I drove past a roadside speed measuring sign the other day at exactly 50Km/hr indicated on my speedo the sign said 49, so I was pretty happy with that...

They are allowed to over read by 10%+6.25mph at speeds above 25mph to be pedantic. And that only applies to date of manufacture. Under reading is not allowed.

i.e. at a genuine 70mph your speedo could read 83.25 and I have seen some *cough*Ford*cough* which come pretty close. But it can't read less than 70.

Although as far as we have been able to find out, the regulations only apply to the date of manufacture.

Homer are you sure that British speedos may not underread? I was under the impression that 10% accuracy was OK either way and I did try and research it. What I found was that this had caused numerous jollies for overpaid bureaucrats to attend conventions in the cause of European Harmonization with some fudges resulting - but I thought the always under rule applied to some European countries but not UK.

I was actually speaking of New Zealand btw.

Our open road speed limit is 100Km/hr and speed cameras would click you if you did over 110Km/hr and it was widely known that there was a 10Km/hr buffer between the speed limit and the speed a camera would get you at.

Then they changed it so that it would click at 105Km/hr and there was a big uproar because that is less than the required accuracy of a speedo - so in a worst case scenario you could be doing 100 indicated by your speedo but still get a ticket if your speedo was more than 5% out in one direction...(but still within spec)

Not sure whether they ever changed it back to 110 or not...
