Xantia Beam Benders

Post by wrinklet1 »

Hi All,
I am going to France in a couple of months and need to make the headlights on my MkII Xantia legal for driving over there.
Anyone got ideas on what part of the headlights need covering??
Thanks
Paul

Good job it's not a MK1  I tried in vain to make beam deflectors work on mine :(

On a MKII I believe you put the beam deflector edge up against the spot cast into the middle of the lens on the dip side with the beam deflector running to the edge of the lens (toward the indicator lens).

There are two spots cast into the glass and the dip side is the one with the lines on it. The main beam side is mostly clear glass.

You're lucky they are bright enough to worry about!

There are some diagrams in the MOT testers handbook which may help

http://www.motuk.co.uk/welcome.htm

On some headilghts you can see the pattern of prisms and lenses that produces the raised beam on the left (facing forward) I think its normally below the centre line to the off side of the light unit and probably triangular. Covering this with black tape should prevent the raised section of the beam.

Maybe you can see the beam benders I used when I had my Xantia. They are home made from black plastic but copied from a Lucas kit. I used them for a lot of years taking the car abroad twice a year. They cut down a lot of available light, but they really do work.

What I do with the XM is to slide my hand across the lens until I can see the beam to the left hand side cut off, it does actually coincide with a line cast in the glass, then stick some black plastic tape over the offending area. Works a treat.

hold a piece of black board in front of each headlight with them on dipped beam (one at a time) you will see the kick up in the pattern, just stick insulatting tape in a triangular shape on the glass till you just delete the kick up only,so the beam pattern is a flat line,it is only the kick up in the pattern which hits on comming driver in the eyes whilst you are driving on the wrong side of the road
