At the bottom of: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=21307 are a few notes that will probably apply to your car (although I have only done the job on a late Mk 1)

i did this job last year, it's not difficult it just takes a long time, it was about 12hours , i found it fairly straight forward following the instructions in the haynes Manuel, make sure you disconnect the 2 pipes the go into the heater matrix when the car is hot otherwise you risk breaking the connector and this is a expensive dealer only part, mine was a mk1 car so may be slightly different but if i remember rightly there was a bolt holding the dash in that haynes didn't mention, you have to remove the lhm reservoir to get at it, just take your time and you should be ok, good luck.

Make plenty of notes and take pictures at each stage of dismantlement. Tag the wiring connectors and index all the parts on the steering column. It takes ages but it's not technically demanding.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right
