Xsara Rattle

We've got a W reg Xsara hdi estate and its a great car except that it has rattles all over. The principal one is quite a heavy clunking which seems to be in the front offside wheel area and occurs on the overrun or during braking. I've had it looked at twice by the dealer. the suspension and brakes are said to be in good shape and there is nothing adrift behind the binnacle. I've run the car with everything removed but it still persists. Anybody got a clue?

I had a XSARA Hdi T reg with same symptoms.It came from the power steering and anew modified pipe was fitted and cured the problem .Check with your main dealer .

Check the strut to inner wing mounting bolts are the correct length. I had a real heavy clunking noise also from the off side strut on my Xsara estate, just sounded like the strut to rollbar link joints had gone. Checked everything but no luck. In the end when the strut was removed the top mounting bolts were too long causing fouling on the top locator/mounting for the spring.
Regarding the rattles....I totally agree mine was the same. HDI engine was great, but the build quality compared to my two previous ZX's, it's not in the same league.
