New Clutch in Xantia TD will not auto adjust?

Post by Stewart(oily) »

Just got my 1998 Xantia TD back together after fitting a new clutch, it has the non adjustable cable and theres slack in the system preventing proper gear selection? is there a way of "waking up" the auto adjuster or is it time for a new cable?

Only thing I've heard of that may work is to push the pedal to the floor, then slide your foot off it, letting it bang up. At worst it will break the cable you need to replace anyway 8) Have fun with the clutch cable clip at the pedal

That was a Peugeot dealers suggestion on a 206 (cable clutch) following a cable which managed to auto-unadjust itself!

I had a Xantia with slack in the cable i got some washers cut a slot in them with a hacksaw then pulled the outer cable back and slid them over the cable and back over the pear shaped end of cable took about 4 i think it was last year.Don't have the car now but its done 6000 miles since then no problems.

I think some washers is the way to go for the moment. I only replaced the clutch after one of the other family Xantiae broke its clip, then needed a full clutch last week, after finishing the job I tested the car and was really surprised at how light the pedal was, this made me think that mine needed doing sooner rather than later, tomorow some washers will be duly trimmed.

A quicker way than washers is to cut a slit out of the side of a suitably sized nut and slide it over the cable

A spacer made from an exhaust manifold insert did the trick, beautiful light clutch :) :)
