Xantia 2.1td

Post by xf8u »

Having looked under the bonnet of my 1997 Xantia 2.1td I was suprised to see that the engine, although not a HDi it differs to that of my previous 1.9td.
It does not appear to have the usual mechanical injector pump but the injectors themselves seem to be conventional (i.e. not the electro-mechanical items found on a HDi)

Is this engine a type of hybrid before hDi's came along?
Also, I would like to know the possibility of tuning the engine. There are a lot of companies that do re-maps for boost and fueling etc. Having looked on such websites the 2.1 does not appear to be catered for.

Is there anyone out there who can advise me.
Thanks in advance
Mike

The 2.1 fitted to the Xantia is a development of the old XUD indirect injection unit. It uses a mechanical injection pump (Lucas EPIC) which is electronically controlled. AFAIK it has a drive-by-wire throttle and this talks to an ECU which uses other engine sensors to talk to the injection pump to control injection timing and duration to meet throttle demands, whilst minimising fuel consumption and emissions. Or some such bollox marketing speak  I believe it also has a turbo wastegate actuator.

Basically, there's more to go wrong, and as it's Lucas pump not a Bosch has 'limited' life span.

On the upside it is possible to re-map the ECU for 130+BHP - Superchips for sure used to do a chip so it should be possible to get it re-mapped. Might cost more than the car now though...!

Any of those places that will hook your car up with a laptop and remap it as you drive it or something should be able to do it for half that if not a smidge less, i have seen £200 tauted on an ebay site but they only covered certain areas IIRC :)

Nothing wrong with a 2.1td, i had one with over 210k miles on it and it had no running problems ever.

The 2.1TD has 12valves, which is a major difference to the 8valve 1.9TD.
Or am I completely lost here ?

Yes it does AndersDK. No idea which side has two valves, I think the turbo benefits from this design in some way. I wonder what the idea behind that would be. It's cooling system is also quite good compared to the other/older ones. I believe the 2.1 came with a fully mechanic pump too, as featured in the early XM.

They also have a hydraulic clutch too, and the gearchange linkage are links rather rather than wires, or something like that.

Yes, 12V - 1 inlet 2 Exhaust for each cylinder. Uses ML5 gearbox rather than BE3 fitted to the 1.9TD. This box has a cable operated gear shift and a hydraulic operated clutch (its still a pull type though!). Box is supposedly better, but the hydraulic clutch operating mech is a sealed system cosing >£400 and the cables only come as a set costing >£250 and a right PITA to fit. Progress. Apparaently

Oh yes, gear cables rather than linkages, not sure if that is better or what the idea behind that was. When I had mine it was a fantastic car, the engine was faultless. It's covered quite well in the Haynes Manual too.

Yes, all my 2.1 td XMs have had purely mechanical fuel injection, even the two '96s I have now. In addition to 12 valves they also have hydraulic tappets, which makes them very quiet - until they start wearing! But all in all a very good engine, one of mine had covered 292k miles when I sold it.

Xac - Bosch I think, at least the ones I have now do.

Deian - Believe it or not, I traded it in, the clutch was slipping as well - and, yes, I told him! I paid £1200 for the replacement and he gave me £400.00 and I was going to scrap it.

Don't suppose it's the same bosch IP as the 1.9TD uses?

No it would be a different one im sure but it would be nice to know the model number or serials from it as it would be good to see if it could be used on SVO like the 1.9tds can be to make things a lot cheaper really :)
