Different HDi Set ups - Cit V Pug

Post by p20 »

Are there different HDi engines maps/set ups?
My recently bought 53 plate 307SW feels flat and unresponsive low down compared to my old X reg Xantia. This is despite having the same 2.0 HDi 110 engine. It's also worse on fuel. The Xantia did at least 45mpg, normally 47-49mpg. The 307 is only managing 42mpg :?

Have you tried the bottle of injector cleaner followed by an "Italian tuneup" treatment?

Worked wonders on my xsara hdi which was flat as a f**t when I first got it.

Same with mine, the first time I gave it a thrash it smoked like a barsteward & great chunks of solid black soot fell out of the exhaust onto the road  Probably the result of 4 years with the previous owner doing the school run with a cold engine in heavy traffic every morning.

I've been giving it the occasional Italian tune up & using Millers diesel additive too. It just seems to be getting quicker, smoother and more economical all the time :D

Its had the italian tune up
There is a bottle of Forte injection cleaner for the next tank of diesel. Can't help think its something more than this though :?

It did take a fair amount of time (5000+ miles so far) before I started to notice any improvement. I have also disconnected the EGR, not that it made any apparent difference, but will help to prevent it getting clogged up in future.
I have cleaned the MAF sensor with some carb cleaner, a faulty MAF can cause lack of power on these engines but its worth trying a clean before replacing it.

Only other thing you can really do is clear the ECU of its learned behaviours but on your Pug im not sure the best way to go about it and any possible pitfalls :( Works on my coupe every few months and after i change something like plugs or lambda sensor :)

My C5 seems to have become much more lively since I recently serviced it. I changed oil and oil filter as you'd expect. Then I fitted a K&N panel filter. I changed the fuel filter and the old one looked very grey with residue in the filter bowl.

I think my fuel filter may have been a problem prior to the service.

I also picked up a tip from a yahoo site which suggested that you check for slack play in your throttle cable. I took a bit of slack out of mine.

The result is a much more responsive C5 2.2 Hdi.

The fuel economy is still rubbish, but it picks up better and now I don't notice any 'normal' cars overtaking me or leaving me standing at the lights any more. So, I don't get depressed by it's performance like I used to.

Was it the K&N or Fuel filter or slack in the throttle.... I'm not sure. That's the trouble when you change more than one thing at a time.

cheers, Kev

Especially the throttle cable AND throttle pedal is worth checking.
These cars were not designed for RHD layout.
Throttle pedal pivoting axle tilting or pedal arm bending is a known problem - preventing full throttle at the pump throttle lever.

Your 307 will have a particle filter in the exhaust, but your Xsantia probably did not.
Read the threads on this. If the filter is partially blocked, it will stifle performance.

Cheers guys. I do need to read up on this particle filter thing. If the economy doesn't improve i may have it remapped. Might aswell be fast if isn't going to frugal

Kev, where did you get your K&N filter from and how much was it? They only ever seem available for the boy racer brigade, or a bit of a bodge.

I got my K & N from Euro car parts.£41 with the vat. They did`nt list it for my 406,but its the same as a Xantia TD`s,so got that 1.Have a look at knfilters.com for part numbers.A lot of Peugeot/Citroen filters are the same.
My 110 hdi was good on performance, but its great since i had it remapped to 140 bhp ish. Also gained about 5 mpg ish.Can often get over 50 mpg from it on a mixture of driving. :)

There are different engine management systems used on 2.0 HDI engines, the majority were Bosch EDC15, whilst others used Siemens Sid 801.

I believe the Siemens version doesn't have the additional fuel pump in the tank, which due to well reliabilty issues is quite a blessing really.

Has anyone had positive results from re-mapping the 90HDi engien? My Xantia is wonderfully frugal, but a little more urge wouldn't go amiss. I do not want to spoil the economy aspect.
