Engine locking bolts

Anybody know how long the M8 bolts should be for locking pump, cam and crank on an XUD, please

Hi Tom, M8 x 50 bolts to lock the pulleys, to lock the crankshaft I have a piece of 8mm silver steel, bent through about 80 degrees at 3 inches, then bent through about 30 degrees at 4 inches from the first bend and at an approx. rightangle to first bend, this leans the top of the bar forwards over the starter motor allowing easey control of the bent end to be engaged with the flywheel through the block.
Silver steel is precision ground low grade tool steel in an annealed state, available from engineers stores, R S components and the like, it comes in standard 13 inch lengths and is inexpensive at small diameters, can be cut with a hacksaw and bent in a vice but don't try to force sharp bends on it, (will also harden easily, makes bloody good centre punches)
The use of a precision timing peg such as this is important for injection pump timing purposes, if you fashion such a tool don't damage the end in a vice or it wont go through the timing hole in the block, if the makers name is stamped in the steel, cut it off or this will foul in the bore, rust in the bore will also foul.

Jeremy is spot on there, i bought a Draper one for XUD's, seems to work a treat! Can't remember how much it was, i think it was less than a tenner though.

mmm, I've used a long reach alan key (one that just fits thro the hole)..is there any problem with using that does anyone think ? May have to invest that £10...do they fit xantia 2.1 as well?

The Draper kit does fit the 2.1TD as well. It fits all XUD's, even the ones in Pugs & R****s.
