ABS Warnng light

Post by mikep »

My P reg Xantia ABS warning light has been going on and off for months
but now it comes on the moment I touch the brakes, also getting a hell of a noise as well. The car is running ok apart from this noise.
Does this indicate a replacement ABS Controller ?

Putting the ABS light on is an indication that the ABS is disabled, so I doubt if the noise will have anything to do with the ABS.

Are you sure that it's not the brake pad warning light?? it could be a simple case of pads worn out and making a row as the discs are being ruined!!

ABS Warning Light

Post by mikep »

Thanks for your prompt reply Slim, I always understood the yellow
warning light indicated a sensor was not working, does it also double up
as a warning re brake pads ?
The noise really became bad on the way back from Calais yesterday and
if you are right they are well and truly ruined !

What sort of noise? A drumming/vibration means that the ABS is activating. A grinding noise means that the discs are now knackered.
ABS activating can just mean a problem with one sensor. This is the most likely cause.

ABS Warning Light

It was more a screeching sound, like cables being stretched to limit

Mike. Please excuse me asking this but.... You're not confusing the low pad warning lamp and the ABS warning lamp. Both orange, sit side by side and even the symbols are quite similar.

When you turn on the ign but don't start the engine the ABS lamp should be lit.... but as long as you haven't got your foot on the pedal and if the handbrake is off then the pad warning lamp is not usually on a rest.

ABS Warning Light

Post by mikep »

No just checked and the brake pad warning light is on extreme left and disappears on starting, as does the ABS. But when I start driving and touch the brakes the ABS light comes on. The horrible screeching noise starts when I apply the brakes to stop.

It sounds to me as if the ABS has had a long running fault, now in addition the pads (either front or rear) are worn out causing the screeching noise.

Until you eliminate the pads its diffucult to diagnose any futher.

EBay is the best place to get them from.

I went round every local supplier, the cheapest i found over the counter. was £50

On eBay, your looking at about £28 for normal disks and pads, or £44 for drilled and grooved with pads

The only problem with buying from Ebay, are the pads specially made in someone's kitchen in Taiwan? Do you really want to risk your life and others to save 20 quid?
GSF, Euro Car Parts, and NEAT all do mail order, and are relatively inexpensive.
