low brake pedal

Unread post by xantia93eko »

i ,have just fitted new front disc pads, the old ones were very worn ,although the brakes now work fine since the change the pedal now seems very low, if you put your hand underneath you can raise the pedal alot any ideas on cause and possible cure thanks
sorry its a 1993 xantia 1.9 td lx think it always was lowish but thought i used to lift my foot slightly when coming off the accelerater now the brake pedal is lower, perhaps i need to try another xantia.

Could it be that the pedal always was low & you've only noticed it since changing the pads?
Its normal for the brake pedal to be quite low in relation to the other pedals on a Xantia, being able to raise the pedal is nothing to worry about too.

I can't see any possible way that changing the brake pads would affect the brake pedal height on a Xantia. :?:

However I can think of one thing that might possibly have happened as a co-incidence - the much debated "silly spring" inside the cylinder connected to the pedal may have snapped and wound over itself effectively shortening its length - very unlikely but possible. If it did the pedal would become lower.

See: http://homepages.igrin.co.nz/simon/imag ... spring.jpg

Might pay to pull it out and check if anything has gone awry with it...

Regards,
Simon

As Simon says I think that the spring has broke or worn through the housing. I replaced the spring in mine with 2 washers and a piece of copper pipe.
