Fast Click from fusebox on 94 xantia

Unread post by ekaftan »

My Xant is not happy to have new brakes it seems, so today started a fast -click-click-click- from the fusebox. It seems a bit dependant of wheel position, but I am not sure.It goes away after a couple of minutes driving...

Is it a common ocurrence?

Thanks.

It has not happened with mine (94 Xantia) Check which fuse or Relay is doing this click (Fuses normally blow outright) Relay's normally click. determine which fuse or relay is connected to what circuit & and you will have a basis to check the cause.

Dodgy indicator switch maybe? Does it go away if you wiggle the indicator stalk?

I know the noise wouldn't come from the vicinity of the fusebox, but...

It sounds just like the indicators, but there is nothing wrong with the car, except the clinking noise. Nothing has ceased to work...

(and of course on the drive home it did not click at all...)

Stick an air hose in near the indicator stalk and blow all the conductive dust out.
Mine used to do it until I defluffed it and it's been right (touch wood) ever since.
The indicators sound like they're working at double pace all the time but in fact they aren't doing anything. Another trick is to turn on the hazard lights and leave them on for a couple of minutes and then see if the noise has gone when next you drive it.

Try the hazard warning lights on for a couple of minutes first. You might be surprised at how successful that can be at times.
I understand when they were new, that the hazards on for a few minutes was standard practice for the dealers when they came in with this problem. (according to an ex Cit mechanic from the UK)

I had exactly the same noise - it was the indiactor stalk. It actually stuck on once and decided to burn the excess rubbish out itself - the smoke was a little bit of a worry!

Strangely, it was actually fine after that!

Giving the switch a good 'work out' very often does the job.
