ZX roof arial ..

Unread post by James.UK »

Erm my 'new' ZX roof arial broke off in my hand yer oner  It was up so straight it made an awfull lot of wind noise, so I lubed it up and tried to lower the angle and SNAP!! the base holder broke in half. Soooo - -

How big a job is it to get at? I know its above the interior light assembly, and I think its held in place with a single nut-bolt fixing? I am just curious as to how much room there is to work in? I have huge hands, can span 10 inches, so room to work and ferkle about in, is always a problem for me...

I'm great on a beach with sand castles though, like a mini JCB!

Hi James, I have to replace mine as well one day on the Activa.

Easiness depends on what is below the aerial. If there is a plate below carrying the interior light etc then it is easy, just remove that and the aerial base is exposed. The coax runs along the edge of headlining and down a windscreen pillar and then into the dash to the wireless.

If you have nothing below the aerial base then the headlining has to be pulled back. That is a wee bit more difficult and involves removing the sun visors, grab handles etc to allow the lining to come down sufficiently to give access.

Because mine is duff, pro-tem I have simply run a wire from the wireless areial socket across the dash and up the passengers side windscreen pillar. On FM it works remarkably well but we have a local FM relay so very strong signals. AM would be a different matter I guess though.

If its the same as the XM they are very reasonably priced at GSF. The aerial and base are I believe available seperately. Its a very easy job on the XM, just remove the interior light, undo the nut that secures the aerial and pull it out. The securing nut also holds the connector on.

GSF do the aerial base at $3.90 (my pound sign is broke) plus VAT. The part number is N89200 for the base (universal Citroen fitting). The aerial (i assume it goes with the above listed base, GSF dont specify) itself is again Citroen universal and is priced at $8.25 plus VAT, part number is 89220. Hope this is of some help.

The screw in arial itself is fine, it's the base that is broken :(

I will "proceed" to take the interior light out and see what confronts me! I hope it's just a nut that needs to be undone.

Either way I have sooo many jobs to do on the car it may be a while before I get round to sorting the radio, but when I do I will let you know how it went. :)

I intend to take my time and enjoy messing with the car, rather than letting it become a huge and unpleasant chore, so it may well be months untill I have got the car up to what I consider to be an acceptable standard.. but summer is on the way, and once its done, then I will have a brill lil car again. :D

Thanks for all your help.. :)

On my Xantia I had to remove the sun visors and pull the headlining down a bit to get access.

Once you get there it's just one bolt, 8mm from memory. The cable stays in place. As far as I'm aware all French cars of the era have the same arrangement.

My newer Xantia had the bolt head encased in a can. It was just a matter of popping the lid off, then the bolt head was exposed.

yeh just use a flat headed screwdriver to pop the interior light out & the antenna base is looking at you.
Unplug the interior light to give you some more room & its held on with either a 10 or 8mm bolt.

Snapping the whip is quite common, I've done one so has the old man.

IIRC the only realy fidderly bit is getting the bolt back through the antenna cable & into the base, I found a shallow socket on a extension bar helped.
