Xantia steering problem

Unread post by Austrian-Johnny »

Xantia 1995 left hand drive
My steering became stiff so I bought a reconditioned pump only to find it wasn't the same(mine had 2 threaded and 1 hose connection this had 1 threaded and 1 hose connection). I hunted down the correct pump at a cost of €240 second-hand. With my old pump in the hand I noticed the wheel didn't move freely it was stiff every quarter turn, the new one ran freely. I fitted the new pump and refilled with new LHM fluid. I opened the screw one turn on the center sphere but didn't hear any air come out.
The steering is still stiff but not as bad. The brakes work fine the car rises and sinks ok with the adjuster in the car. I had 4 new spheres fitted (at the corners, not the center) about 8 months ago.
Any suggestions???

Its going to be either the pinion valve or the ram, if its the valve its comon for the steering to be stiffer in one direction than the other.
If it happened suddenly and there is no power assistance at all I would suspect the ram.

I still have a bit of power assistance and it didn`t happen suddenly. So I assume then its the pinion valve. Unfortunately I don't know where or what this is..

I may be stating the obvious, but if the LHM level gets low, the steering stops working first. Don't assume the sightglass is telling the truth, either, they have been known to stick.

Have you changed upper cross peace of the steering column?
It worns very often, so at first try it.
It is very cheap, also it always does effect.
