Do mk1 xantias have anti-sink spheres?

Post by Xaccers »

I've got a friend with an early N reg 95 Xantia.
He says it's a mix of mk1 and mk2.
He'd like to confirm if he has anti sink or not, he has a center sphere at the back.
So, did mk1's have a center sphere at the back?

If it has a centre sphere then it has anti-sink, yes. MK1s generally did not but N reg is firmly into MK2 territory.

A easy way to tell is that MK1s had the chevrons on the bonnet and these moved to the grille on MK2s.

It depends what your definition of Mk1 and Mk2 is!

I'd consider the models where the badge on the bonnet moved to the grille
as both being Mk1's. The Mk2's would be the facelifted grille in the bonnet variant with changes to the airbags etc too...

As citrojim says, the anti sink would have been on M plate (95 on) models
so your friend's Xantia should have antisink.

Ah, I thought mk1 was bonnet chevrons, mk2 grill (in my opinion an improvment in looks), and then facelift which to me looks horrible.

Quite agreed. I consider the original MK1 (with Chevrons on the bonnet) the best looker and the "facelift" really awful at the front. I'm qualified to say that as I have an example of each....

I've always wondered if it were possible to replace the facelift bonnet/bumper etc with ones from a chevron grill version.
Course if it were a hatchback, I'd also replace the hatch or atleast get rid of the silly little 3rd brake light that looks like it's just been stuck on, and either get a 3rd brake light from a 406 (small strip unit that fits inside at the top of the rear window) or track down the spoiler that my 95 SX had with a lovely big 3rd brake light strip in it.

Do mk1 xantias have anti-sink spheres?

Post by Gregg1100 »

Hi All,
My 1994 Xantia 1.9TD has anti-sink on it. First registered 17 Mar 94, so may even be a late 93, ---all depends how long it was in showroom for before sale. Also got 203,341 miles on it--bit smokey first thing in morning, but like me---just about knackered :D .

Watched a slightly sick sounding M reg diesel Xantia without anti-sink this afternoon. Bit surprised as I thought it was introduced in 94 and this must have been a late 94 or early 95 car.

I read in a document posted I believe by 'Mandrake' a few months ago that all Xantias with power assisted steering had antisink from December 93 - Its certainly on my 1.9D registered in march 94

All Xantia's from July 1994 onwards have Anti-sink.

SOME Xantia's from December 1993 to July 1994 also have Anti-sink, depending on where they were sold.

Refer to the following:

http://homepages.igrin.co.nz/simon/imag ... ink-01.jpg

So basically only the very early first year models (or those without power steering, and there weren't many of those) missed out on Anti-sink.

The Chevrons moved from the bonnet to the Grill in 1995, but styling otherwise stayed the same. At the same time there were quite a few other small changes such as going from cable to electronic speedo, etc.

Mk1's finished in 1997 and Mk2's went from 1998 to 2001 and had the restyled front end with the grill being part of the bonnet, and numerous other changes all over the car.

Regards,
Simon

Yes -

Here in DK the 1.6L non-PAS, non-antisink version was sold in quite large numbers. Remember that outside UK you have some ridiculous import taxes. Anything ripped from the car lowering the price will help - when you consider an import tax of 180% - plus the 25%vat

Easiest way to tell if you are still not sure, is to look at the hydraulic pump.

Early cars without anti sink were fitted with the 6 cylinder pump (2 x pipes) and used the BX / XM setup with a flow distributor valve. Whilst cars with anti sink were fitted with the 6 + 2 cylinder pump (3 X pipes) and got rid of the flow distributor valve.

Slim.

I am that friend :-) and i can confirm it does indeed have anti sink.

Its a first aug 95 N reg (first day of N plate) baseline LX turbo d.

The chevrons are on the grill.

I thought most people considered Mk1 to be 93-97 and mk2 to be 98-01 as they made substantial changes in 98 (new engines etc) whilst there were many other 'facelifts' where they tweaked around with a few things.

I have noticed on parts that several go from 93-95 then 95-97. which is most anoying when you have a 95 car!

I have just tried to change the rear spheres and anti sink along with the accumulator, none of the rears would budge and trust the french to put things in the way (anti roll linkage in the way of the anti sink)
