leaky BX

Unread post by philcut »

How can i check how much oil is in my gearbox I've got an '88 BX16TRS.I know i could put some more oil in until it dribbles out of the fill hole, and deduct the amount from what should be in there. But i wondered if anyone knew of a better/more accurate wayI think i may have a leak from the gearbox and i know i've got a leak from the rocker cover which drips off the engine/gearbox joint-eventually.Both leaks seem to mingle at that point,so it's difficult to tell exactly which oil is leaking. If i could more accurately measure if i'm losing gearbox oil, then i would know if i had 1 or 2 problems. As i can't fix the engine leak until the end of the month when i'm back in UK,any hints to check for leaks from the gearbox or likely seals that might be leaking would be most welcome,so i can get any bits i need whilst i'm in UK.

Check the drive shaft seals in the diff housing, well known spot for gearbox oil to escape, these seals are a diferent size for each side of the diff.

Usualy the only other place it gets out is at the input shaft, but its rare and even if there is a leak here it doesn't often amount to much.
