Sphere size?

Post by steelcityuk »

Can any member confirm or otherwise the size of the front hydractive sphere on a Xantia being larger than the others. According to GSFs chart it's a 500cc 70bar? item whereas all the other spheres are 400cc. Does this mean it's physically larger?

Thanks.

Steve.

Yes, that's right - the 500 sphere is the volume size as used
on Cx fronts and some Bx's.

The GSF ones are 500cc 70 bars, but the original citroen ones are 450cc 75 bars. Both are roughly equivalent. (I have the latter on my car)

Also the original citroen (multilayer diaphram) front strut spheres are actually 450cc 45 bars, not 400cc 50 bars like the GSF ones. (Also roughly equivalent)

Thanks for the replys.

I've spoken to staff at my local GSF and they say the spheres are exactly the same size as the others. Now I know I specified the right spheres, checked them at the counter and when they went on the car so I suspected it could be a wrongly marked up sphere but the GSF conversation makes me think otherwise.

According to GSFs chart the Xantia and XM take the same 500cc sphere for the front hydractive valve.

I wouldn't have suspected anything amiss when I changed the spheres because the one I removed from the front HA had a number that could be identified.

>>The anti sink and the rear hydractive were the correct ones but the front hydractive sphere has this number - 96 181 131 then underneath that it are the numbers 8-345.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

There is a good listing of citroen part numbers for Xantia spheres at:
http://www.citroenbilten.com/forum/showthread.php?t=965 about a third of the way down the page.

96 181 131 is the correct front HA sphere, and as it has a multilayer diapragm, your old one probably has more service life left in it than the GSF sphere you replaced it with!.

I've just checked my tables again, and I see that 1993-1995 Xantia's DID have a choice of front hydractive spheres as original citroen parts - 500cc 70 bars with a urepan (conventional) diaphram (75 520 295) or 450cc 75 bars with a multilayer diaphram. (96 181 131)

1996 onwards the Citroen original sphere is only the latter multilayer one, and the first one was dropped.

A larger sphere size in cc is perfectly acceptable as long as the gas pressure is reduced by the same proportion.

The point of a larger sphere is that it has a wider load range from minimum to maximum carried weight.
I wouldn't have suspected anything amiss when I changed the spheres because the one I removed from the front HA had a number that could be identified.

Thats the multilayer Citroen type - same as I have on my car... If its less than 8-10 years old its probably still ok!

I might try and photograph the sphere part number table when I get a chance and put it up, its only a few pages, as the question seems to come up a lot...

Ok, I've posted up the relevant pages:

Sorry about the quality, I only have a camera, not a scanner! :)

Thanks for posting that up and the further info.

Unfortunately being new to Citroen when I changed the spheres and that I couldn't identify it, I binned it! DOH!! Still it's a 1999 car so maybe it was time.

I'm wondering if I should go to another supplier and see what they offer for a front HA sphere. Would I be correct in thinking that the smaller sphere fitted is probably not able to handle the weight of the front end?
