Xantia V6 gearbox problems....
Hi All,
Well the gearbox has given out on me.... The mechanic says it is the Torque Converter if that means anything to anyone.... Anyone have any ideas on what my best options are???? there is nothing else wrong with the car.... the engine runs sweet.... the hydrolics are working with no leaks.... electrics are fine.... only problems is the gearbox.... there is no power trasfer from there to the engine.... the engine turns over and revs like normal.... the oil has been changed in the gearbox.... and the parameters set back to default.... I have been given a quote of £300 for the part and about £600 labour.... anyone know of ideas.... i dont want to scrap the car.... but then again i dont want to pay out a grand to get it fixed....
Model, including year : Xantia 3.0 V6 1998 (R)
Engine Type : Petrol
General Location and Country : High Wycombe UK
Any recent work done on the car : No work done on car apart from services
Approx. how long you've owned the car or any relevant history : Had the car for 13 months now.... and I have had no problems before this....
Thanks in advance....

This type of failure does not seem typical of a torque convertor. A torque converter will generally keep working unless it has no fluid, or has a catastrophic mechanical failure.
You didn't say whether the garage you used is a dealer or expert at auto transmissions.
If neither (or even if either), I would recommend that you get a second opinion from someone who is.
I have had a very good experience with http://www.ivanautos.co.uk/ in Potters Bar.
Keep us informed.

I'd certainly get a second informed expert opinion. I've had several
Xantia and Xm autoboxes fail due to their reaching the end of their life
expectancy with the high miles (Xm's generally stop working at 120k
miles).
If there is no drive whatsoever you've lost the primary banding "clutch"
that engages the forward gear in the gearbox - one give away it's this
is you should still have reverse as it uses a different "clutch". I'm calling
the pick up band rings in the gearbox a "clutch" as these do in effect grip
and transfer the drive from the engine through different gears.
If you check out the following link it's all explained simply!!
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic ... ssion2.htm
I'd say pay the money and get it fixed by someone who'll give a
guarantee that's worth something - if you go out and spend £900 on
something else what would you want/get that's a patch on the V6
Xantia!? And you'll know the ONE single element to fear going wrong
on the car wont pack in again!! (OK - look after the engine too
Andrew
ps - the only other failure I can envisage and have read about is the
loss of fluid that runs through the torque convertor or it simply isn't
being pumped by the gearbox's oil pump...

I recently took my Audi A4 for an auto box service. The oil was dirty and the specialist said there were signs of wear.
The auto box was much more responsive after a transmission oil and auto box filter change.
But, my point is, the autotransmission specialist said that if the box packed up altogether, he could rebuild it using new internals for around 1200 quid.
The box on my Audi is a ZF unit. Apparently there are only very few auto box manufacturers and car constructors use these boxes.
So, one option would be to go to a transmission specialist and ask his opinion.
The chap I used was in Bridgtown which is an area of Cannock in Staffordshire.

Not missing the AX - Contact:
You could always just buy a complete car, V6's are so cheap it'd cost less than a box replacement.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

I really want it to be a automatic so a manual gearbox is out of the question.... but thanks for the advice....
I have had a look at 2 other v6's and they both needed work doing to them.... the thing is with my one I know there is nothing else wrong with it.... and it needs no major work doing in the future.... but if anyone here knows of any for sale please drop me a line....
thanks....

Like I said, if you spend 900-1200 quid on something else would it be a patch
on yours - ideally you don't want to spend any money on ANYTHING, but to
get a working car again your choice is either fix what you know and love,
or buy into something else with all the uncertainty/gamble potential bills/work
that may have in store.
I'd certainly look for the most competitive BUT still good gearbox repair
specialist to make the £'s go further...

Update....
Hi All....
Thanks for all the replies and help....
Ok the car has done 107K....
I have had it inspected by a 2nd ex-citroen specialist and was given a similar quote (of a worst case scenario - a re-conditioned gear box fit and labour).... the car has no major faults.... a slight leak in one of the hydraulic tubes....
I have found someone local who is willing to have a look at it and I have spoken to him over the fone…. He gave a similar diagnosis to what Andrew said…. That it sounds like the gear box pump has gone or needs cleaning…. As the car has forward drive which is looses…. And by turning off the engine and re-starting the car it ‘finds’ the drive…. It has reverse drive and this seems to be working fine….
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a gear box pump???? I have tried German Swedish…. But I haven’t had any luck finding it on the website…. Any help would be much appreciated….
And again thanks in advance….
