mystery vibration

Unread post by Bunji »

Hi
Citroen xantia sensation TD
I have a vibration noise on drivers side at front. Happens only when car moving and when engine is under load, ie dropping down a gear. Not when cruising.
Local garage spent an hour trying to locate it no joy but doesn't seem mechanical. He thought it may be the aircon pipes loose but not that it seems.
Any ideas before I sell my house to pay for a main dealers holiday?
Thanks

Your problem is very comon for older citroen's. I will try to explane with my poor english. If that happens only then cornering then:
In most cases it is:
a) grenade of semiaxle is wearn out
b) semiaxle become curved (wheel become to close to gear box and semiaxle presses one of the grenade)
If it happens aslo then you ride straight the problem might be engine pillow.
I hope that will help
P.S. In my country these repair works wouldn't cost more than 150$ with spare parts, so it is funny when you are talking about the house:)))

Reading through soundchild's note there is a very good thing to check here. What he describes as engine pillows should be read as engine mounts, and if these are worn then they will defintitly give problems under load.
On front wheel drive cars if the mounts are worn the engine will tilt within the engine bay under load , which can cause the engine or moving parts connected to it the touch other things under the bonnet.
When you accelerate does the gearlever move at all in the car, as the gearbox will also shift under load. The easiest way to check the mounts would have been to have a look under the bonnet, leave the handbrake on and bring the clutch to its biting point and see if the engine moves but with the handbrake working on the front wheels this won't work. Try resting the front of the car against a wall to get the same effect of the handbrake being applied. If the engine is shifting under load you might also be able to see where the troublesome noise is coming from, usually its the alternator belt rubbing or something similar.

I'd go with both the above as strong chances.
We had a CX with a similar problem a few years ago; nearly drove us insane. The mounts looked OK but under acceleration, the motor obviously moved (or rotated) to a point where the exhaust hit a crossmember. When we actually lifted the motor, we could see that although the front visible part of the engine mount was OK, the hidden part had gone to jelly.
Do the tests as suggested & I think you'll be pretty close to the mark.
No doubt driveshafts have been checked? They normally rattle when turning on full lock although one that has been driven with a split boot can also be noisy if it needs a new boot & regreasing, even in a straight ahead position.
