Citroen Peugeot Auto Box V6

Unread post by jgra1 »

Hi all, It seems my auto box is 'shunting' more and more when it changes from 3 to 2.. its a nasty jerking sensation, when slowing down for a junction etc... Could this be a sign of ££ ahead?

thanks

Try draining and topping up your auto box with new oil several times.. Most Auto box probs are due to having old, dirty, and-or ifffy fliud in them..

Hi
Mine did this until all the software was updated late last year.

Both Plips and the "Magic" card were needed.

Hope this helps.

Can you describe the "shunting" a bit more ? Do you mean a jerk/thump ?

This is probably a bit obvious, but have you checked all the engine mountings for play ? Often with an automatic a thumpy/jerky gear change which seems like a gearbox problem is really just play in the engine mountings...

With the bonnet open and the car idling, get someone standing near the front to watch the engine while you go between neutral, drive, and reverse with the brake on...if you see the engine tilting an inch or two forwards and backwards you should check the mounts...

(Always check the simple things first!)

Mine has quite a bit of play on the top right engine mount and you can definately feel it thump in some gear changes...(but not all)

Simon

I think that he must be refering to the later auto-adaptive as fitted to my Xantia.. apparently they sometimes get their knickers in a twist if you accelerate quickly as you are coming to a stop (as you may at a roundabout) and they give a nasty thump/jolt. Both my V6's have had this 'chracteristic'.

Mine does this too, is it curable by software?
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

So where can I get the software, and does the Xantia have a USB port?

I am interested in this update/modification... would it be possible to have some advise/information of a more technical nature?

Where is it obtained from
What is this new 'plip'?
How do you use the software
Can you do it yourself with a laptop etc?

Cheers

I would also be interested in finding more about the software upgrade. Is it applicable to both Mk1 and Mk2 Xantia V6?

My Mk1 V6 has performed this jolt maybe 10 times in 50,000 miles, and it gives me a bit of a fright each time (I think that I have run over or hit something). I think that it is probably caused by the transmission selecting two gears at once for a fraction of a second. It only happens at around 10-20 MPH when hitting the accelerator firmly after coasting down from a higher speed.

The last time it happened a couple of weeks ago, when it jolted the engine hard enough on its mounts to break the hydraulic return hose from the front HA valve, causing loss of all the oil.

Sounds like it also affects other Auto boxes; my ZX Auto can change with a bit of a bang if its halfway through a "lazy" change then a sudden opening of throttle tries to get the box to change down 1 and a half gears (one down from where it was, plus the half it's already done); does it normally when going from 3rd to 4th (both lockup gears), then kicking down to 2nd (non-lockup) normally around 45mph; that sort of makes it tied into the torque converter lockup...

For info; 4th gear wont come in below 43mph in any circumstances; same for 3rd - 30mph
This is assuming that the ZX has the same box as Xant (4HP24?)

Will have a play tomorrow on the way to works and try and provoke it to see if it ties in with the lockup/non-lockup gearchanges..
