Hi, I have been offered a 1200cc Clio with a noisy camshaft or tappets. As it is for free and I wanted it for my nephew to learn to drive in, any pointers as to likely reasons for the problem and possible solutions. I am not too knowledgeable on Renault lumps as my usual disease is Citroen, but I do have a workshop so repairs will not be a problem.

Could just need new shims on valves, or the cam may be worn, but I would think this is unlikely nowerdays, as I've nt heard of cams wearing out on modern cars.
Get a haynes manual and have a bash, as it's a free car you haven't got much to lose, only a few quid on parts, and you can always sell for profit later.

My first suggestion would be an engine flush and oil and filter change.
I assume the engine should be running a 10w-30 and someone has used something thicker. These engines run hydraulic tappets and these work best with a thinner oil.
Oh, is the noise louder at start up? If so, almost certainly oil incompatibility
