Currently have a 1995 1.9TD SX which is gradually getting nearer needing replacing.

Now have the chance to replace it with a 1998 2.1TD Athena 2 version with 108000 miles. Does anyone have any knowledge of the 2.1TD? Is it as "frugal" as the 1.9TD (obviousky I realise it should use slightly more fuel!).

Is it as robust and reliable?

Thanks in adbvance,

Lee.

Hi Lee,

I have a 97 2.1 SX with 170000 on the clock which I have run for five years.
The engine has never given me a problem and still returns 45mpg whilst being chipped and driven enthusiastically.

The only real downside is the extra weight on relatively fat tyres causes the outside edges to go fairly quickly on the tyres, although if I slowed down a little that might help

It's a great engine and every diesel driver should have at least one.

Hope this inspires.

Cheers

Steve

regarding steve's issues with tyres wearing on the outside, i don't have this problem myself, it is a fantastic engine, a proper workhorse, i have no problem running mine, and i'm the richest of people, it's brilliant on long journey, it will eat up the roads in no time, and a it will do so cheaper than the 1.9 as there is less strain on the engine, oh my engine has done 202000 miles and it's still working as if it's a new engine,

as for the lucas epic system, i've had no problems here either, maybe a certain batch of them were bad or good, if you want a good one maybe try getting a plate close to R960 PKV.... KV being the area, and 960 being a number, i was talking with a guy earlier this week and he had a R875 ?KV and his was a phase one, so try getting something later than 960 and after P (in the PKV), and you should be ok re: the lucas epic system

good luck

I would concur. The 2.1 is a brilliant engine, more efficient and quieter than the 1.9. With normal driving you may well get a better fuel consumption. I am a fairly gentle driver and my XM estate averages around 40 mpg with a best of 55mpg on our Scottish trips.

"try getting a plate close to R960 PKV"

I've got 1.9TD VSX with R140 OKV - I think Cit registered a load of high spec Mk1s at the end of production, as I've seen quite a few (although there is an Rxxx OKV 2.1 TD Mk11 I've seena few times round here). I think np's estate was a similar reg - and that was a late Mk1 VSX TD. I've also seen quite a few around that reg on e-bay. Weird. KV is Coventry I think.

The TD12 engine (2.1 l) has 12 valves - hence the name and is therefore more efficient than the 8-valve 1.9 TD. Hence better fuel consumption. The engine itself is virtually indistructable - I've run my 2.1 XM for 535 000 km and its still on its original valves, cam, pistons, crank, etc, etc. Only the head gasket has been changed after a water hose blew at high speed. The only reason it isn't still running is that a Volvo F12 took a disliking to the car!

mine is a R plate number 454, 138000 miles and still going strong only problem i've got is if you accelarate hard when you go to change gear it seems as tho the revs don't want to drop, other than that it's great and getting about the same mpg as my old 1.9td around 47mpg, watch out for the seats as a lot of the 2.1td's had suede seats and they wear realy badly :)

We have had our 2.1td for a while now and its suede and its a HNV ending plate.

The turbo needed to be done when we bought it but it had spent a lot of its life towing and the clutch had been done previously. good cars and pretty close to the 1.9td at normal motorway speeds and better once the speed creeps up and you have wieght in the back as well :)

Lee check with your insurance company first, origanally i was looking at a mk1 xantia got a quote for it and was group 8 but spotted a mk2 for same money and bought that instead got a shock when i went to insure it the insurance group bounced up from group 8 to 12 even though it was the same model 1.9td lx estate and the excuse i got for the group increase was labour costs are more on the mk2, i know this aint anything to do with your post but just thought its worth a mention.
