hydraulic suspension

Post by roxanne »

my xantia 1.9 diesel (basic model) is loosing fluid from under the manual
diesel pump, there is a sphere directly underneath could the sphere be
leaking.
how easy is this to check I am not a mechanic but if I have an idea what
I am doing would it be hard to remedy.
the suspension and the car lifting have taken some time to react since I bought the car but I thought this was probably the pump.
I look forward to any help any of you can give me.

Don't know aht age or model your Xantia is - but if its after 94 it will have anti-sink - and I think the valve is located in the area you describe. These valves can leak.

There have been some posts on the subject but I am unable to find them.

Could you give me a bit more info about this leak. Is the fluid green? (Mop a bit up on some white tissue and it's easier to see what colour) If it's green then it is hydraulic oil (LHM)
Also more info on where abouts you see the source of the leak and I'll see if I can help. I have a Xantia myself and have had a few "experiences" so hopefully can help you sort this.

If the fluid is green, then it is hydraulic... if it is black, then it is a head gasket leak, as this is exactly where the oil feed to the camshaft bearings passes accross from the cyl block.

I had this some time back on my '94 Xantia XUD with 220K on the clock. Unbelievable that the vave seats and clearnces were still OK, although I did a re-grind while the head was off.

thanks for all you replies.
the fluid is green lhm I have filled the resevoir and it has flowed straight
out underneath the diesel handpump.
if it is a valve leaking is it easy to get to and replace, look forward to any
replies.
thanks roxanne

It is runs straight out without the engine even running then it'll probably the main feed hose to the pump (can't think of anything else in that area). If it dumps it all when the engine is running, then it could be just a seal, or maybe the main output pipe from the pipe has split.

I'm assuming that the hand primer bulb is the manual pump you're on about and (for the benefit of others) its in the same place as a TD!

of some sort of diagram.
look forward to your answer.

If it's leaking below the hand primer, my guess would be the feed pipe to the O/S front strut, they allways go here.

Your best bet would be to find someone (maybe a garage) with a flaring tool, they can fix this without having to replace the whole pipe.

All I can think of in that area is the small high pressure pipe that goes to the offside hydraulic suspension top (the bit with the green sphere on). It has a few bends in it and on one of the bends is a bracket that holds it to the side of the wheel arch wall. Sometimes the pipe gets a hole in it underneath this bracket and will just pour out under pressure. Easily fixed by good mechanic putting in a coupling at this point. Not possible by us mere mortals as special pipe tools are needed to shape the ends of the pipe.
Hope that helps.
