You're asking the question - which means you're unsure. How much would a rebuild cost? What's the saving - how much do you like gambling?

As long as it meets Cit/Pug Specs it should be fine. Costco do an oil for £10 for a 5litre tube. semi synth Castrol stuff for high mile cars..

Is the HDi really all that high tech mechanically? I understood it was effectively an XUD with a new head and a fancy injection system.

I wouldn't be sure as to whether there's a lot of differences but it could be down to seemingly simple things like the tolerences, metals used, the turbo (hotter or finer tolerences), service interval or even maybe emissions.

Only thing I know for certain is that it costs a load more when it goes wrong injection wise.

It may be tolerances but the HDi uses the same crank as an XUD. Any difference is probably to do with the extension of service intervals and different filtration.
