309 tailgate earth

The tailgate wiper on my '93 309 often fails to work. The wiper motor is earthed to the tailgate, but I have found that the tailgate is not earthed reliably to the car body. If I connect a jump lead between the tailgate and car body the wiper starts working again. Does anyone know where the earth connection for the tailgate is? If all else fails I could add an earth wire, but I'd prefer to keep the original set-up and get it working by cleaning connectors etc.

Not having seen a 309s tailgate for a long while, Its not earthed through the hinges is it?

Maybe the hinge pins are dirty?

Cant remember which car it was but I had one that either the doors or tailgated that was earthed through the hinges.

Does the tailgate have pins for the power or wires beside the hinges?

If it has wires beside the hinges they sometimes break with the flexing.

check tailgate struts early ones earthed through them

Thanks for all the suggestions. It looks like this one is supposed to earth through the hinges. I've run an earth wire from the tailgate to the car body. Problem solved!
