HDi Lift Pump

Post by reblack68 »

It seems that the lift pump in the fuel tank is the HDi weak link and it takes the rest of the fuel system with it when it goes.

In view of this is it worth replacing the lift pump as a precautionary measure? It costs £120-135 although GSF list one at £65 too, I don't know what the difference is.

If it's an easy enough job and worthwhile I would change the lift pump every couple of years. It sounds like the HDi is otherwise pretty tough.

Does anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Is it pieces of this pump that destroys the downstream components? if so then what about a filter between it and the rest of the system? otherwise if there is a certain mileage after which these fail then as a precautionary replacement it might be wise.

It does seem to be bits of the pump that do the damage. The fuel filter should deal with it but apparently it doesn't.

I'm just trying to decide if precautionary replacement of the pump is worthwhile. You don't run a timing belt to the end of its life because the consequences of it wearing out are expensive, maybe the lift pump should be in the same category.

Well if the pump only costs £125 and is straightforward to fit then its not a bad price for peace of mind.
