I owned a 91 BX 17TD for just under a year, and have owned 3 ZX TD's.
Lets start with a few facts and figures. The XUD7TE 1769cc engine in the BX produced 90 BHP, whereas the XUD9TE is 1905cc in the ZX and produces 92BHP. So not a lot between them. The 1.9 version produces more torque but I do not have the exact figures to hand.
In terms of driving, around town and through the gears the ZX just feels loads quicker. The BX feels a bit lumbering.
On the motorway, they are more evenly matched. Both have the ability to accelerate in 5th from say 70 to 90 quickly, and can cruise well at high speed. In terms of ultimate top speed, I'd say that the ZX has it in the bag by about 10mph from my experience, although the figures published by Citroen shows very little between them, about 5mph I think. The BX has an amazingly "long" 5th gear (thats why we used to put TD boxes in BX 16 valves so they didn't run out of gears). The ZX has shorter gearing which may be why it feels quicker.
We could talk about handling..........which I could witter on about for ages, but will leave that to someone else.

Just out of interest I'll add this:
Found some info regarding the 1769cc unit apparently produces 90bhp@4300rpm and 183nm@2000rpm. The 1905cc unit produces 92bhp@4000rpm and 201nm@2250rpm.
